Forget BJ's (no pun intended), but Hooters is coming to Tanforan very soon! Well, at least it's going to be more convenient than the one at the Wharf...

5 Places to Drink for Cheap (or Free) This Week

Looks like we missed a few of these FREE spots last week in the Mission: Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink for Cheap (or Free) This Week

Beverage expert Steve Olson is making an appearance at Elixir to promote the orange-flavored liqueur, and explore its uses beyond background work in margaritas and souffles. It's an opportunity to learn more about its production, and to enjoy free samples in a venue that's a little swankier than your parents' liquor cabinet. (Thursday, July 23, 7-9 pm, at Elixir, 3200 16th St., Mission.)

This 7x7 blog is definitely a great resource for weekly happy hour specials.

The Magic is now officially GSW East (Pietrus/Foyle/Barnes/Watson?)

The Orlando Magic's active offseason continued Monday when they agreed to a two-year contract with free-agent forward Matt Barnes.

Barnes' agent, Aaron Goodwin, who also represents Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard, confirmed the deal in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Tuesday but declined to disclose financial terms.

Since reaching the NBA Finals for just the second time in franchise history, Orlando has traded for former All-Star swingman Vince Carter, signed free-agent forward Brandon Bass, matched a five-year, $34 million offer sheet to restricted free agent Marcin Gortat and pursued Barnes to join a group of newcomers that also includes Ryan Anderson from the Carter trade.

Barnes, 29, averaged 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists last season for Phoenix and is regarded as a versatile player off the bench who can guard forwards of all sizes and make the occasional 3-point shot.

The Magic began the week with roughly $1.9 million left from their $5.9 million mid-level exception after signing Bass.

With Hedo Turkoglu leaving in free agency to sign with the Toronto Raptors and Orlando forced to sacrifice Courtney Lee, Tony Battie and Rafer Alston in the Carter trade, last season's Eastern Conference champions will have a decidedly different look next season.

But Magic general manager Otis Smith has been unafraid to aggressively re-shape the supporting cast around his All-Star trio of Howard, Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson, undoubtedly aware that the Los Angeles Lakers were the first NBA team since the Detroit Pistons in 1989 to lose in the NBA Finals and come back to win the championship in the following season.

Kobe Loves Pacman

The world they reign in may be different but visiting basketball superstar Kobe Bryant could feel a great bond with Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

It’s not because they share the same sports apparel brand. Or he’s just being a gracious visitor to his host’s favorite son.

It’s more like a champion seeing his own winning attitude and dedication to his craft in another. Like an artist appreciating a fellow artist.

“I love him," Bryant said of Pacquiao during Tuesday’s press conference for his 2009 Asia Tour: Philippines for Nike in Makati City.

“I enjoy being around people who are just as competitive, who have the same passion and work ethic," the “Black Mamba" said. “It’s an honor to meet him because you can tell by watching him perform when he boxes that he truly loves the sport and I have the tremendous amount of respect for him. I wish him all the best."

Now a “Pacfan" himself, Bryant would love to see Pacquiao duke it out with Miguel Cotto live on November 14 – if only his tight schedule would allow.

“I’ve never seen him fight in person but if I don’t have a game in his next fight, I’ll be there," he said.

Asked about what he feels about what Pacquiao’s chances against Cotto, Bryant said: “Manny Pacquiao all the way. I think it's not even a question" to the applause of everyone in the ballroom.

Bryant was in Manila for the kick off leg of his 2009 Asia Tour for Nike, which would bring him to Singapore, Taipei, Hongkong, Shanghai and Chengdu afterwards.

In his whirlwind tour of Manila, the multi-titled dribbler visited the Nike Park at The Fort to meet young ballers from select Gawad Kalinga communities and also introduce the Dream Season, a new basketball shoes for outdoor games.

Highlighting the tour was a basketball champ at the PhilSports arena in Pasig City where he showcased his skills and shared his basketball prowess alongside the Nike Elite Campers.

Already on his third visit to the basketball-crazy country, Bryant said he likes the Filipinos kids’ energy and enthusiasm the most.

“It’s always the kids," he said. “I missed being around kids. They love the game. I love being around their energy. Takes me back to when I was a kid – you just play, have so much fun playing. And they’re willing to work hard to be the best."

And of course there’s the famous Filipino hospitality.

“Everytime I come here, I’m welcomed with open arms. It feels like home-away-from-home," he said.

As with his every tour, Byrant wishes to convey his message of hard work and work ethic to kids who aspire to make it big in basketball someday.

“You have to work hard, play hard. You don’t play like you’re the No. 1 guy on the team; you play like you’re the 13th, 14th, 15th guy on the team. That’s what I want to pass on to them," he said.

And when Kobe speaks, his horde of Filipino basketball fans are all ears. That probably includes Pacquiao, who espouses basically the same principle himself.

BJ in the pool

No... not what you think. Our brother from another mother, UFC's BJ Penn, joining the ranks of athletic cool guys that can jump out of a pool. Don't try this at home.

Adios CJ

The Orlando Magic are close to signing free agent point guard C.J. Watson, giving them an alternative to veteran Anthony Johnson as a backup to often-injured Jameer Nelson.

Watson, 6-2, 180 pounds, played the last two years at Golden State after spending one year in Greece and another year in the NBA Development League.

According to NBA sources, Watson could be signed as early as this weekend. Watson last season averaged 9.5 points and 2.7 assists, mostly as a backup for the Warriors. Golden State would have seven days to match any offer, since Watson is a restricted free agent.

The Magic have been looking for a low-budget point guard since they traded veteran Rafer Alston last month to New Jersey as part of the deal that brought Vince Carter to Orlando.

Alston was the Magic starter through the second half of last season and through their playoff run. Despite helping the Magic reach the NBA Finals, he became expendable because the Magic already were committed to Nelson as their starter for next season.

Nelson, though, has struggled with durability through his career. He played 42 games last season and 69 games the previous year. His size and willingness to throw around his 6-0, 190-pound frame has led to several injuries in his five years with the Magic.

The Magic already have Johnson under contract, but they decided not to re-sign free agent point guard Tyronn Lue.

"You're gonna love my nuts!"

I thought I was home drunk last night watchin' late night tv. But then I realized that I don't drink. Then I thought, ah then this is real.

Now this is slightly different from what was actually on air (this version seems to cut in scenes from the movie "Breakin") but everything else is pretty much the same.

Maybe he wants more street cred after this recent arrest. Thus, the trip-hop remix of "Slap Chop".
